While there was a clear trend of most ectomycorrhizal decomposers to occur more frequently in older stands, some species (notably, Cortinarius ominosus and Cortinarius kauffmanianus ) were also common in younger stands, suggesting that a few species maintain the function of ectomycorrhizal decomposition in secondary forests (Packard et al ., 2025 ).
