First, regardless of TE binding, or TF class, a clear trend is that TFs tend to be older than the sites they bind: promoter TFs have a median age of 429 MYA, while dark TFs have a median age of 99.19 MYA (Supplementary Fig. 9b ), which is still older than a typical binding site even for promoter TFs , and older than most human TEs (Supplementary Fig. 9c ).
