In fact, there were relatively more wild-type bacteria than PIA-deficient organisms in the expelled collections than the intestinal tract, although this difference did not reach statistical significance, suggesting that PIA-producing bacteria may have a survival advantage over PIA-deficient bacteria during transit through the digestive tract.
