For each published paper, the result reported for each primary outcome was categorized as (1) favorable if the result was statistically significant ( p < 0.05 or confidence interval [CI] excluding no difference) and in the direction of the test drug being more efficacious or less harmful (in the case of side effects); (2) inconclusive if the result did not reach statistical significance; or (3) unfavorable if the result was statistically significant in the direction of the comparator drug being more efficacious or less harmful.
