Both patients from HNPCC families had CHRPE, and 32% of patients with CHRPE had a first-degree relative affected by bowel cancer. One of the control subjects with striking retinal pigmentation had a father and aunt with colorectal cancer. In the control group as a whole, in which we were able to confirm a negative family history, CHRPE prevalence was substantially less than in the colorectal cancer patients (4.9% vs 19.5%, P<0.02). Osteoma prevalence was almost 3-fold greater in patients than in control subjects, although osteoma prevalence alone did not reach statistical significance owing to the small numbers.
