With the high electric field existing in the membrane, and particularly at the external interface, this pressure can be quite significant, and may well be one of the factors operating.' The effect of the compressive force can best be treated in terms of its effect on the activation energy of an ion in leaving or entering the membrane (Offner, 1969 b).
