Although the sex interaction in this study did not reach statistical significance ( P = 0.12), the observation that periodontal disease was apparently more strongly associated with incident type 2 diabetes among women may be worthy of note, given recent findings that inflammation was a stronger predictor of type 2 diabetes in women than in men ( 23 ).
