This reaction can be directly detected by turbidity measure- ments, or indirectly detected by including a 'tracer'. Tracers have been radioisotopes for nearly three decades. There is now a clear trend to replace these tracers by non- isotopes for two principal reasons: to avoid radioactivity, and to improve the chances of automation.
