As in our study, when compared to controls, spousal caregivers in Shaw et al.’s study showed a trend of higher risk for having a serious illness that was associated with providing more ADL and functional assistance to the patient; however, they found no association with the patients’ BPSD. 7 As Shaw’s study focused exclusively on spousal caregivers and ours, however, included any informal caregiver, direct comparisons cannot be made.
