In addition to its embryo-specific function, Oct4 also controls the expression of Dppa5 , as it does in ESCs (data not shown); Dppa5 is an embryo-, germ cell- and ESC-specific RNA-binding protein whose role in maternal-embryonic transition is not known [24] , [25] . Piwil2 (also known as Mili ), whose protein product and its bound pi-RNAs are known for their role in regulating retrotransposons in the fully-grown mouse oocyte [26] , also showed a trend of decreased expression upon Oct4 knockdown, although it did not reach statistical significance.
