Based primarily on data from small studies, the meta-analyses found reductions in 30-day all-cause postoperative mortality (odds ratio [OR] 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.54–0.90), deep vein thrombosis (OR 0.56; 95% CI 0.43–0.72), pulmonary embolism (OR 0.45; 95% CI 0.29–0.69), pneumonia (OR 0.61; 95% CI 0.48–0.76), and respiratory depression (OR 0.41; 95% 0.23–0.73) and showed a trend toward reduced postoperative myocardial infarction with the use of neuraxial blockade (OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.45–1.00) [16] .
