Interestingly, among 18 genes that contain FERM domains, including several members of the 4.1 protein family, we identified nominally significant associations with diabetic nephropathy for SNPs located in eight of these genes (supplementary Table 5), including FARP2 (FERM, RhoGEF and pleckstrin domain protein 2; P = 3.0 × 10 −4 ) and EPB41L2 (erythrocyte membrane protein band 4.1-like 2; P = 2.3 × 10 −4 ).
