Preliminary results demonstrate increased ATP or adenosine in specific brain regions [ 127 , 143 ], including a significant increase in ATP and a strong trend toward increased adenosine in cerebral cortex [ 127 ], and upregulated ATP synthase gene expression in hippocampus [ 20 , 141 ].
