We replicated and updated two studies of rectal surgery up to 2004, which found decreasing rates of abdominoperineal resection over time and a strong trend in relation to socioeconomic status and anterior resection, which remained after adjustment for staging differences. 26 42 In common with our study, the potential influence of comorbidity on this association was not examined.
