We confirm the existence of such a small effect in our supplementary analysis of 3,078 patients from the pre-cART era but note that the effect did not reach statistical significance in patients with a CD4 cell count >350 cells/μl, the patient subgroup for whom a rapid CD4 decline is considered relevant under current guidelines.
