In general, as the number of citable items decreased, the IF of the journals increased, though this relationship did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.132) largely due to the extreme effects of the New England Journal of Medicine , whose IF score increased by 21 in the absence of any significant changes in the number of citable items over the 8 years of the study.
