Across survey strata, the availability of closed-understory terra firma forest (as measured on transects) was the sole and highly significant habitat predictor of elephant density (Elephant density = 0.00004 closed understory forest −0.1159; R 2 = 0.93; p = 0.0004).
Availability of forest clearings was a weakly significant predictor of gorilla nest density at the stratum level (Gorilla nest density = 0.008626 Clearing + 0.049705, R 2 = 0.58; p = 0.0454).
The lowest elephant densities were found in the LTCR and Mokabi, which were both significantly lower than densities recorded in NNNP and Kabo and showed a similar trend for Pokola, that approached but did not reach significance (LTCR: p = 0.062, Mokabi: p = 0.058).
The availability of closed understory terra firma forest and forest clearings both showed a positive trend with gorilla nest density across management units.
