Although our results showed a trend of association between this parasite and diarrhoea in IBS patients, more extensive case-control studies that include parasitological molecular diagnostic techniques and genetic profiles of pro-inflammatory cytokines are required to clearly define the potential role of "non-pathogenic" intestinal parasites.
