Perry et al (1981) found no significant difference between the two groups with respect to serum half-lives or renal lithium clearance levels and concluded that the average steady state serum lithium concentration is unchanged by conversion to single daily doses. Moreover, if given once daily, a higher 12 hour serum lithium concentration can be achieved, and it is this concentration that is believed to correlate with the therapeutic efficacy of lithium (Amdisen, 1975). In this study, single dose subjects needed less dose per day compared to divided dose subjects, though the finding did not reach statistical significance.
