At baseline, operated cases were significantly more likely than controls to be in the poorest quartile of PCE in Kenya (OR = 3.3, 95% CI = 1.0–10.8), Bangladesh (3.2, 1.5–6.6) and the Philippines (4.4, 1.9–10.0), and there was a significant trend of association between falling PCE and case status ( Table 4 ).
