Although the amount of REM sleep increases across the night in other birds [31] , [38] , [49] , [50] , the mean increase in ostriches ( Figure 4 ) did not reach statistical significance (rmANOVA on ‘time of night’: F = 1.757, df = 10,30, P = 0.113) nor did the mean increase in REM sleep/total sleep time (F = 1.974, df = 10,30, P = 0.073), perhaps due to the small sample size.
