The progression in gas exchange indices over time may provide a more accurate assessment.[ 29 ] Likewise, the clinical transition from ALI without ARDS to ARDS has also been identified as an important trend in gas exchange which adversely impacts prognosis.[ 1 ] The inciting cause is also an important variable in ARDS progression and prognosis.
