Although there is a well established predominance of HBV genotypes B and C in Southeast Asia, including Viet Nam, previous reports suggest that there may be significant genetic heterogeneity at the subgenotype level; HBV subgenotypes B2, B4, C1 and C5 have been reported in Viet Nam with subgenotypes B4 and C1 predominating [13] , [40] , [42] – [46] .
