Likewise, the amount of dying cells in mid-exponential cultures were in general higher in the fis1 Δ strains as compared to the wild-type strains, especially the number of early apoptotic cells, and while there was no significant increase in the total number of cells showing signs of cell death between the control and cultures expressing wtDFNA5 or mutDFNA5, the latter two still showed a trend toward enhanced late apoptosis and necrosis (Figure 4C ).
