Amino acid substitution in orthologous sequences Since comparative studies on isoelectric po int distribution and surface charge distribution in proteins of methanogenic and sulphur-metabolising archaea have revealed a clear trend in higher usage of acidic residues in the former group of species (Figure 6 & 7 ), it is tempting to examine the general trend, if any, in the amino acid substitution patterns between the orthologous proteins from members of these two different groups.
