Carcinoembryonic antigen was not statistically significantly elevated in UK gastric cancer patients with early stage disease ( P =0.7579), and although CEA levels >10 ng ml −1 were observed in 7 of the 53 patients with late stage disease, across this patient group the increase did not reach statistical significance ( P =0.0971).
