The minimal difference (which did not reach statistical significance) observed in the D1 and D2 curves in patients with N 0 can be attributed to understaging of patients undergoing D1 who were actually affected N 1 but in whom the nodes responsible for recurrence and therefore for the shorter disease-free interval remained in the surgical bed.
