Circulating proteins as potential biomarkers of sunitinib and interferon-α efficacy in treatment-naïve patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

As in the ITT population [ 4 , 13 ], patients in the biomarker subset receiving sunitinib had significantly longer PFS than those receiving IFN-α [median PFS 13.7 vs 5.1 months; hazard ratio 0.293 (95 % confidence interval or CI 0.129–0.665); P = 0.0021]; sunitinib patients in the biomarker subset also showed a trend for improved OS compared with IFN-α patients [median OS not reached vs 18.3 months; hazard ratio 0.509 (95 % CI 0.246–1.05); P = 0.0626].

The absence of a significant association between sVEGFR-3 and either PFS or OS in the IFN-α arm of the present study, although trending toward significance for OS, suggests that sVEGFR-3 may be more predictive of sunitinib efficacy than prognostic in RCC, but more research is necessary to address this question.
