The negative association, although weakly significant, between stroke mortality and blood glucose levels as well diabetes mellitus in this study using multivariate analysis was not obvious. 29 , 30 The present findings were not in agreement with those of our previous study undertaken in a public hospital, 10 which did demonstrate a positive and significant association of diabetes mellitus and hyperglycaemia with acute stroke, as has been reported in developed countries.
