All three genes tested showed a trend towards higher gene expression levels in vivo , but only splB showed significantly higher gene expression in endocardial vegetations compared with both planktonic growth phases (60.4-fold upregulation versus logarithmic growth phase, P <0.01; and 8.6-fold versus stationary growth phase, P = 0.03).
