The economic burden associated with obesity is also quite significant: in one study, investigators reported that obese 45-year olds had a significantly reduced chance of surviving to age 65, and survivors incurred an approximately 40% higher lifetime Medicare costs, compared to normal weight 45-year olds ( 11 ).
