TBARS are low-molecular-weight substances, consisting malondialdehyde (MDA), which are formed from the decomposition of unstable lipid peroxidation products and react with thiobarbituric acid (TBA) to form fluorescent adducts.[ 13 ] Deficiency of glutathione, the major intracellular antioxidant, in its reduced form (GSH), has been observed and suggested to be of pathophysiological significance in schizophrenia as early as 1934,[ 14 ] although differences did not reach statistical significance in that study.
