In a recent review, surgical thromboembolectomy in patients with a thromboembolus caught in transit across a PFO showed a trend toward improved survival and significantly reduced systemic emboli compared to anticoagulation [ 6 ], although mortality after pulmonary embolectomy has been reported as 27-41% [ 8 , 9 ].
