CD45.1 + macrophages, injected into the peritoneum of old mice, showed a nonsignificant trend towards a reduction in percentage of phagocytic cells compared with those injected into young mice (Fig. 5A,B ), and a statistically significant decrease between these groups was apparent when mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) values were analysed (Fig. 5C ).
Furthermore, analysis of mean fluorescence intensity, representing mean number of particles taken up by each macrophage, showed a striking and highly significant difference (Fig. 1C ), which highlighted the inefficiency of phagocytosis by macrophages from old mice.
Results demonstrated a trend towards increased CXCL13 in lavages from old mice; however, this did not reach statistical significance (data not shown).
