However, cancers as causes of morbidity and mortality are of increasing interest.[ 2 ] A number of population-based SSc cohort studies have reported a significant increase in lung cancer rates; the largest North American study noted an increase that did not reach statistical significance.[ 3 – 5 ] Three recent meta-analyses concluded that patients with SSc have 3–4 fold greater risk of developing lung cancer with males having a higher standardized incident ratio than females.[ 6 – 8 ] Prior studies of SSc associated lung cancer have identified the presence of the Scl-70 antibody and interstitial lung disease (ILD) as potential risk factors for lung cancer.[ 9 – 11 ] However, radiographic abnormalities and details of pulmonary function testing (PFTs) were not reported.
