Smoking intensity (number of cigarettes per day) did not show a significant trend ( p = 0.17); however, duration of smoking was modestly associated with an increasing rising trend, as the highest two levels of exposure were associated with the largest risk of adenomas versus never smokers (25 to <35 years: RR 1.28, 95 % CI 1.09–1.49; and ≥35 years: RR 1.21, 95 % CI 1.05–1.41, p -trend = 0.006).
