Restricting the links to those within 3 years of the index episode, there was still a strong trend with year: the odds ratios from the ordered logistic regression analysis, adjusted for lineage, age, sex, and smear status, for the year groups 1999–2001, 2002–2004 and 2005–2007, compared to 1995–1998, were 0.47 (95% CI 0.33–0.66), 0.35 (0.25–0.50), and 0.37 (0.25–0.54), respectively.
