However, when the same comparison was performed after separating major (intracranial, gastrointestinal or any other type of bleedings requiring blood transfusion) from minor bleedings, we found a significantly lower incidence in minor bleedings in favor of the NOACs (RR = 0.69 95% CI 0.56–0.85; p = 0.0003) ( Fig 5A ), while no statistically significant difference in the incidence of major bleedings was evident, despite a clear trend in favor of the NOACs-treated arm (RR = 0.82 95% CI 0.53–1.25; p = 0.36) ( Fig 6 ).
