A survey questionnaire performed on 112 perimenopausal or postmenopausal female members of the British Migraine Association using HRT (oral or transdermal conjugated estrogens combined with cyclical oral progestogen) showed a trend toward greater improvement of migraine in women using transdermal estrogen compared with oral conjugated estrogens and found that headache was often associated with the progestogen phase of cyclical therapy. 28 Two studies reported an increased risk of migraine among users of HRT. 29 , 30 Among 17,107 postmenopausal women selected from the Women’s Health Study, 62% were current users of HRT and 39% had never used HRT, and 11% of all postmenopausal women – both users and nonusers – experienced migraine.
