A pooled meta-analysis of five studies did find a reduced rate of the composite endpoint of death or recurrent pulmonary embolism when thrombolytic therapy was used compared with anticoagulation alone in the setting of massive PE, although each individual endpoint failed to reach statistical significance [ 46 ].
