The probability of development of HE was higher in patients in the fourth quartile of urine MCP-1 in both subgroups of patients, those treated with lactulose and those with rifaximin, compared to the remaining patients, yet the difference did not reach statistical significance (48% vs 32%, p = 0.08, in patients treated with lactulose; and 69% vs 40%, p = 0.05 in patients treated with rifaximin).
