Although costs in each province were almost $6000 higher for the less tight group in which infants spent more time in high-level neonatal intensive care wards, the result did not reach statistical significance and may reflect a lack of statistical power. 13 , 14 The upper and lower limits of the 95% CI can be examined to determine whether they would exclude a minimally important (cost) difference (MID), like that used for noninferiority trials. 15 , 16 If the MID is either outside or included within both CI boundaries, then neither treatment strategy is significantly different in cost and the decision threshold to change policy is not reached.
