In 2003, a pooled analysis of 14 case-control studies found that there was a significant trend of reduced thyroid cancer risk that was not found after adjustment for smoking [ 11 ], whereas a pooled analysis of five prospective cohort studies published in 2012 reported an inverse association between alcohol consumption and risk of thyroid cancer [ 12 ].
