With the increase in the Cu dose, OH − was eventually depleted and CaCO 3 replace OH − to react with CuCl 2 , as expressed below: 2CuCl 2 + 2CaCO 3 + 2H 2 O → Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl + 3Cl − + OH − + 2Ca 2+ + CO 2 (2) This was well reflected in the scenarios of high Cu doses, showing lower carbon content in the solid residue, relative to that in the original red mud and a clear trend that carbon content in the solid residue decreased with increasing Cu dose ( Figure 1 b).
