Although in Electrochemistry: History and Theory, published in 1896, Wilhelm Ostwald described Grove's gas battery as “of no practical importance but quite significant for its theoretical interest”, in 1889 Charles Langer and Ludwig Mond coined the term “fuel cell” as they were trying to engineer the first practical fuel cell using air and coal gas.
