There have been several studies in the USA: one multicentre cohort study found lower rates of sexual activity in young people with PHIV compared with those with BHIV, with sexual activity more likely in those older, those with a boyfriend or girlfriend, and those using illicit drugs [ 26 ]; however, a smaller single-centre study found similar sexual risk behaviours in young people with PHIV and those with BHIV [ 27 ], whereas another cohort comparing young people with PHIV to those HEU found a lower proportion sexually active in the former, but this did not reach statistical significance [ 28 ].
