Compared to retrospective cohort studies ( n = 40), most other study designs were associated with improved reporting completeness, with before-and-after design ( n = 27, +1.7, 95% CI 0.82–2.7), individual randomized controlled trials (RCT) ( n = 40, +2.0, 95% CI 1.1–2.8), and cluster RCTs ( n = 23, +1.7, 95% CI 0.79–2.7) all reaching statistical significance, and quasi-experimental designs approaching significance ( n = 7, +1.9, 95% CI −0.19 to 3.9).
