NO 3 – N was significantly higher in the plots after two years of arable cropping (11.3 μg g −1 ) than under continuous set aside (3.7 μg g −1 ) while plots under one year of arable cropping showed a trend for more NO 3 – N, (7.5 μg g −1 ), there was no depth effect.
