There was also a trend towards increased risk of adverse birth outcomes (LBW, PTB, and SGA) in primigravidas, but these associations did not reach statistical significance after controlling for a composite indicator of malaria in pregnancy probably because of adjustment for malaria during pregnancy, which is on the causal pathway between gravidity and birth outcome.
