Comparison of the multidecadal SST variability in both records shows a highly significant positive correlation for the period after the MCA (1230–1900 AD) (R = 0.29; P = 0.03) when compared to randomly generated red-noise data, and a positive correlation for the period 300–900 AD (R = 0.42; P = 0.12), although only marginally significant, which is probably due to the low data-resolution in core MD99–2322 (see supplementary information for statistical analysis).
